• 1st ANNUAL INSTAR FILM FESTIVAL

    Cine Independiente-Cine Pendiente

INSTAR, the Hannah Arendt Institute of Artivism directed by visual artist Tania Bruguera, inaugurates this space that will take place on the last weekend of each month. In Cuba, it is very difficult to find independent directors. Once they finish participating with their films in international events, the films are shelved. It is very difficult to keep up to date with the filmmakers’ next projects, or where the films can be found, as there is no dedicated place for them within the institutions. INSTAR has emerged not only as an alternative to existing movie theaters, but as a way to get to know the directors and their work through debates after the presentations. It also offers the possibility of preserving the copies of the films in their maximum resolution, for which a Biblio/Media is prepared with all the technology, which will also be useful for future consultations by researchers and film scholars. Because the conservation and care of the master copies are also challenges independent filmmakers face today. This space also seeks to connect with filmmakers, promoters, critics, from the region or other latitudes who are committed to risky cinema. A cinema that starts from the idea that instead of making the dream film, make the film that can be achieved, to assume from authenticity, the challenge inherent in producing and distributing cinema outside the established circuits in today’s world.

    Directors Cycle

What is currently happening in cinema, based on the digital revolution and the possibility of accessing new technologies, is reminiscent of the turbulent sixties. While the Cuban guerrillas were winding down their armed revolution in Havana, the uprising of letters and the arts was also being prepared. The ICAIC Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry was founded in 1959. The concerns of its creators regarding cultural neocolonialism, and the perfection of Hollywood commercial cinema, motivated the creation of an imperfect cinema, or also known as free cinema, new cinema. These ideas seemed truncated by the provisional, but fortunately they return in the new generations. Sixty years later, the Cuban film industry faces the same setbacks as before. It is perceived from the origin of resources—not only those from ICAIC interested in light comedies and historical themes, but those that arise from international institutions with established policies regarding what is considered art cinema. In the case of Cuba, it encompasses the films that are made in poor countries, as a window to approach a depoliticized and post-dramatic cinema.
