    Ariel Hidalgo

    Ariel Hidalgo is a writer whose first book was published in 1976, Orígenes del movimiento obrero y del pensamiento socialista en Cuba, selected to be read by literature students. The following year he won the prize for best essay for Latin American university students from the Universidad de Panamá for “José Martí y las pretensiones de predominio yanqui sobre el Istmo de Panamá.” In 1981, when he was a philosophy professor, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for a manuscript he wrote criticizing the Cuban regime.

    Following an international campaign, he was freed in 1988. A copy of said manuscript, “Cuba, el estado marxista y la nueva clase,” was published in the United States, followed by “Disidencia, sobre el origen del movimiento disidente en Cuba” in 1994. In the following two decades, many of his articles were published in El Nuevo Herald in Miami. His book Metafísica: El más grandioso de todos los secretos was published in 2014.
