Caterina Camastra
(Brescia, Italy, 1976)
Caterina Camastra is a linguist, translator, writer, teacher and researcher living in Mexico and interested in the history of Novohispanic theater, traditional poetry, comparative literature, the crossing of genres and discourses. Vagamundo by vocation, academic by pretext, Caterina is a member of the Research Unit on Cultural and Social Representations at the UNAM. She is the founder of the Los Falconi New Novohispano Popular Theater Company, whose work can be seen on Facebook and YouTube. She has published two books with Ediciones El Naranjo (Mexico), numerous research articles in international journals, and a series of Arabic calligraphies illustrating “Quinteto de Mogador” by Alberto Ruy Sánchez (Alfaguara, 2015). She is also the winner of the “Más allá del silencio” award (best non-Cuban author) in the Décima al Filo 2019 contest (Cuba). She is an Italian translator for the Cuban writer Alexis Díaz-Pimienta, who has taught her the art of poetic improvisation. She currently has an artistic duo with the Cuban improviser Yordanys Oliva, a project that you can find on her Facebook page, “La Tiendita Mexicana y el Santo de Mayabeque.”
