    Synopsis:

    A conversation with the visual artist Ángel Delgado about his 1990 performance La Esperanza es lo último que se está perdiendo during the inauguration of the collective exposition El Objeto Esculturado at the Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales. We talk about the processes of criminalization of political art, censorship and the politics of domestication of the Ministry of Culture.

    Angel Delgado
    (Havana Cuba, 1965)

    Angel Delgado lives and works in Long Beach, CA. He is a graduate of the Escuela Elemental de Artes Plásticas (1980); the Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro (1984); and he studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte (1984-1986) in Havana, Cuba.

    In 1990, Delgado put on a performance titled “La esperanza en lo último que se está perdiendo”, as part of the collective exhibit El Objeto Esculturado which led to his incarceration. He spent six months imprisoned and this experience left a mark on his life and his work.

    In 2003 he began working, represented by the Galería Nina Menocal, in Mexico City. In 2005 he decided to establish himself definitively in Mexico where he lived until 2013, when he then emigrated to the United States. Currently he is also represented by the Building Bridges Art Exchange Gallery and Foundation, in Santa Monica, CA.

    In 2004, Delgado was awarded the Artist's Residency at The Mattress Factory Museum, Philadelphia; in 2008 he was awarded the MOLAA (Museum Of Latin American Art) award in the category of installation art in Long Beach, CA; and in 2016 he was awarded the Artist's Residency at The Fountainhead Residency, Miami, Fl.

    Delgado has participated in over 100 exhibitions both collective and solo, in over 15 countries, including Cuba, the United States, Belgium, France, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Turkey, Germany, Colombia, Spain, Italy, and Brazil.
