Synopsis:
Cuban filmmaker Alejandro Alonso, whose most recent short film, La historia se escribir de noche (2024), is part of the competition at the 5th INSTAR Film Festival, reviews his outstanding filmography, which includes titles such as El proyecto (2017), Terranova (2021) and Abisal (2021). Alejandro tells us about his motivations as an artist and shares details of his creative process, marked by hybridity and experimentation with cinematic language.
Bio:
Alejandro Alonso is a Cuban filmmaker based in Madrid. He graduated in Documentary Directing from the San Antonio de los Baños International School of Film and TV (EICTV) in 2015. His films have been shown in Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, the United States, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, Germany, Romania, France, among other countries. La despedida premiered at IDFA and won several awards: Best Film in the Hits category at FICUNAM, Full Frame President Award, Special Mention at Sehsüchte, and Best Documentary at the Gibara Film Festival. Duelo premiered at Cinema du Réel and won Best Short Film at the 32nd Mar del Plata Film Festival and the 58th Popoli Festival. The project had its world premiere at Visions du Réel, won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 60th Dok Leipzig, and was considered by Cuban critics to be the best documentary made on the island in 2017. Metatrón also premiered at Visions du Réel. Home arose from her residency at the MEP and the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in the fall of 2018. From 2017 to 2019, she coordinated the EICTV Master in Alternative Cinema.
